RSPB St. Aidan’s Reserve - Trip Report

Return to Trip Reports

We arrived in what can only be described as perfect conditions for this visit.  There was no wind and the early overcast conditions kept the fierce heat at bay.  Tim chose the path which led us to some semi arid lagoons where a fantastic variety of birds were congregated.  The muddy margins had attracted some lovely waders, some still in their summer plumage as they make their way down from their breeding grounds in the arctic. Notably were a Ruddy Turnstone, Wood Sandpiper, Black-tailed Godwit and Lapwings. There was also a Garganey and Little Grebe.  At very close range a Kingfisher perched beautifully in front of us on the anti predator fencing.

Pausing at The Warren over looking the main lake there was a Lesser Black-backed Gull and Herring Gull on the island and on the lake were Pochard, Tufted Duck and Great Crested Grebe.

The sun emerged about 2pm which shot the temperature up to remind everyone that most of Britain is in heatwave conditions.

There were further sightings of Marsh Harrier and Spoonbill. A Peregrine was seen over the Causeway. Common Tern nests with young could be seen on Lemonroyd Lake. A fruitless hour was spent looking for Black-necked Grebes, which can be confused with Little Grebes when not in their breeding plumage.  At last one was found.

After the lunch stop two Egyptian Geese were found on Astley Lake with two unseasonable Wigeon. A Water Rail was heard over the reed beds. A highlight was a small flock of Bearded Tits, one especially beautiful juvenile perched on the reeds.  A total of 68 species was seen.

An interesting plant found by Muff Upsall was identified as Greater Water Parsnip. Because water levels are so low there are plants growing in the margins of the lagoons which would otherwise be submerged. Kevin Walker confirmed that it is an excellent record for VC 64.

Very many thanks to Tim Jones for leading and thanks to Mike Smithson for planning the trip, but who was unfortunately unable to lead. Ten members attended.
