Who We Are

Our History & Objectives

The Society was formed in 1947 as the Harrogate and District Naturalist and Scientific Society, the present title being adopted in 1958.

The early history is well described in the HDNS Silver Jubilee Booklet published in 1972 and in the more recent A brief history of HDNS.

The objectives of the Society are to promote and disseminate natural history knowledge in all aspects and also to direct energies towards some practical form of nature conservation.

Functioning of the Society

The business of the Society is conducted by the Council which consists of the President, Vice President, six elected members, and the honorary officers: General Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Secretary and Programme Secretary.
