Two large, shallow lakes, formed by damming the Thornton Beck, which date back more than two centuries, set in open parkland with scattered, mature trees. The Castle has a walled garden.

Parking

There is a large, free car park in Ripley village.

Access

Access (when open) through the castle shop. A fee is payable, except in the winter months.

Terrain

There are constructed footpaths around the castle and walled garden. The walk around the lakes is mostly on short cropped grass.

About the location

The lakes are good for waterfowl, including Canada and Greylag Geese, Mallard, Shelduck, Teal and passage waders. The walled garden and parkland hold Nuthatch, Tawny Owl, woodpeckers and winter thrushes. A herd of Fallow Deer roams the parkland.
